In my experience, places where people come together to work on their issues — spiritual communities; self-actualization, therapy, and intentional change groups; small gatherings devoted to identifying and resolving personal gunk — become, by necessity, very gunky oceans of gunk. And when you become friends with a fellow gunk-swimmer in an ocean of gunk, it’s real and deep in a unique and wonderful way.
Over a decade ago, I met Trish Corbett in such an ocean of gunk, and she is a true beauty. So when she turned seventy a few weeks ago, it felt important to find a birthday gift that celebrated both her beauty and her years of fearless gunk-swimming.
Trish is warm and fun and fashionable and vibrant, so I called another such woman, jewelry designer extraordinaire Mikelle Terson (see blog “The Yoga of Beautiful Jewelry”).“How about a sterling silver goddess bracelet,” she suggested.
“Yes, that sounds right,” said I, intuiting that Mikelle might have a deep understanding of gunk-swimming and how to properly honor it.
And, sure enough, the gift was a hit.
If you are a gunk-swimming goddess or if you know one, you might want to check out Mikelle’s wares at the eleventh annual Grand Central Fair (Grand Central Station, 42nd Street at Park Avenue in Manhattan) November 23 through December 24, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday. She has collections with names like “Sacred Fun,” “Tribal Delicates,” and the magnificent “Shine Collection” (that magically makes you feel luminous — I kid you not; gunk-swimmers never lie about such things).
And if you are into resolving your gunk, or knowing more about the gunk we live in, or just knowing about everything in a bigger way that might even blow your gunk to smithereens, you might want to check out Trish and her partner, Michael Manion’s Mindshift Institute. They have online resources and a center in North Hampton, Massachusetts (The Center for New Knowledge, 114 Main Street, 2nd floor, Northampton MA 01060, 413-587-4004) where they offer workshops, a library, videos, talks, and the camaraderie of fellow swimmers.
